Christian Rap The New Hip Hop Movement
If you have paid attention to the billboard charts lately, you realize that christian rap is on the rise. Christian rap takes the hard hitting sound of rap music that was made popular in the 80's and 90's and mixes it with the theology taught in our nation's churches. In essence, Christianity + Rap = Christian Rap. A lot of doubters said that Christian rap would never make an impact on the music scene, but one Christian rapper who goes by the name Lecrae not only put Christian rap on the map but continues to draw attention from many secular outlets.
Christian Rap is the new gospel music
That's right, Christian rap is now being more accepted in the church. Whereas a few years ago it was shunned, now it has become common place. It is not unusual for a church to have youth events where they will have 1 or 2 artists come and perform a song choice of Christian rap. I have even been at churches where mimes and signers have danced and performed to Christian rap. Because of the deep theological content, pastors have been left with very little discourse except to accept it. After all, they cannot shun the very words of the Bible just because they are placed in Hip Hop form.
Christian rap is becoming more common place and even some artists like MC Psalmist are making sure that the genre is used for corporate worship. MC Psalmist's CD, Heart of Worship, has many Christian Rap songs that are worshipful including the title track. It was his goal to take worship music and meld it with Christian rap in a way that would be accessible to the mainstream church.
